|
|
Hello!
After some testing, number crunching, reading and lots of reading I managed to compile a more or less accurate compendium of monk's fighting styles.
This is only a brief intro to what this guide will become to be, I will keep it updated and add more valuable information in near future.
Things to come soon(tm): Tips and tricks, fighting vs different enemies, levelling guide, training guide, equipment guide.
v0.1 beta: MONK STYLES:
Yin (defensive) styles:
Leopard Style - Defensive:
Excellent to use for tanking melee hitters, mobs and players alike. Similar to defensive stanced warrior with "leopard paw to kidney" acting as riposte skill.
Damage type (activation, special chakra hits): cold
Chakra hit ratio: low (has special chakra hits)
Style stat benefits: minimal hitroll+damroll bonus
Special skill: Quiet Movement (passive) in forests (NB! Only without adrenaline!)
Tattoo skill: Lunge - Opening skill, unable to use in combat, moderate damage, non-counterable, uses chii
Bonus skill enchantment at Grandmaster: Sense Motion
Panda Style - Two-Handed:
Versatile style, has biggest damage potential out of all Yin styles, but only moderate defense when compared to leopard style.
Damage type (activation, special chakra hits): lightning
Chakra hit ratio: low (mostly has special attacks, Well Fed increases special attacks ratio)
Style stat benefits: minimal damroll bonus
Special skill: Boulder Roll ("ROLL" - active skill) - Causes minimal to moderate damage to all enemies in the room when you "roll" in manually or moving a direction after activating panda style.
Tattoo Skill: Belly Bounce - Combat-only skill, grants a small chance to deflect some damage, uses chii
Bonus skill enchantment at Grandmaster: Throw
Drunken Style - Dual-Wield:
Better defense than Panda, less than Leopard (unless drunk). Less damage than Panda, more damage than Leopard.
Has hidden/innate chance to avoid more attacks from raging berserkers and people who are empowered by frenzies and similar.
Upon activating will reverse effects of bash/bodyslam/grapple etc. for next couple of rounds - great counter against spamming giants!
Hit avoidance/dodging will improve when actually drunk. NB! Drink BEFORE entering the stance or you will be unable to.
Damage type (activation, special chakra hits): water
Chakra hit ratio: low (has his own special attacks)
Style stat benefits: Decent boost to AC
Special skill: none (has a starting-round passive instead)
Tattoo skill: Stagger Damage - Combat-oly skill, mediocre damage reduction, uses chii
Bonus skill enchantment at Grandmaster: Trip
Crane Style - Dual-Wield:
Low defense, high accuracy medium damage output. Best against shield-using opponents, high defense opponents, movement cost saving and dealing
damage to storm/stone giants. and aoe stuns.
Damage type (activation, special chakra hits): mental
Chakra hit ratio: moderate
Style stat benefits: Very high Hitroll boost, small malus to damroll
Special skill: Lightning Kicks - enhanced kick for up to 3 rounds after switching into style. Works like "Barrage".
Tattoo skill: Wing Buffet - Aoe-damage, Aoe-stun, mental-based, uses chii
Bonus skill enchantment at Grandmaster: Air Thrash
Yang (offensive) Styles:
Tiger Style - Dual Wield:
Highest consistent damage dealing stance. Highest base damage style.
Damage type (activation, special chakra hits): fire
Chakra hit ratio: moderate + special attacks
Style stat benefits: minimal strength gain, low hitroll loss, high damroll boost
Special skill: Enhaned Kick, basically double kicks and kick deals higher damage
Tattoo skill: Exploding Palm - Aoe, fire based aoe-damage, flamestrike basically, uses chii
Bonus skill enchantment at Grandmaster: Kick
Monkey Style - Defensive:
2x more attacks per round with 2.3x less damage per attack, best used for training and fighting vs nuking spellcasters.
Best used with fasting up at all times due to quicker hunger/thirst when in monkey style.
Damage type (activation, special chakra hits): arcane
Chakra hit ratio: high
Style stat benefits: minimal dex gain
Special skill: Increased avoidance (melee+spell) for 3 rounds upon activation
Tattoo skill: Monkey Clamber - Activatable, extra attacks and follows the enemy instantly if it should flee, uses chii
Bonus skill enchantment at Grandmaster: dirt kick
Mantis Style - Two-Handed:
High damage, effective against parrying opponents, bonus to nerve strike efficency.
Damage type (activation, special chakra hits): slashing
Chakra hit ratio: very high with special mullet-whacking attack with very random but capable damage
Style stat benefits: Minimal damroll and hitroll gain
Special skill: Bonus to Nerve Strike for 3 rounds after activation
Tattoo skill: Rolling Water - damage increase for next round, does not count to chakra hits, uses chii
Bonus skill enchantment at Grandmaster: nerve
Snake Style - Two-Handed:
Moderate damage, mostly for disabling effects and chii regeneration.
Damage type (activation, special hits): poison
Chakra hit ratio: very high
Style stat benefits: minimal dexterity and hitroll
Special skill: Multiple disabling chakra hit attempts upon switching into the style
Tattoo skill: Spear Hand Strike - Single-target stun chance, silence if used vs channeling enemies, uses chii
Bonus skill enchantment at Grandmaster: grapple |

Hey estel, thanks for posting your guide. I'll definitely incorporate your thoughts into the class where I can, since I think you are probably nailing the expectations down correctly |

That was my post actually, I thought I contribute something whilst I was incognito to gain a new/fresh start.
Anyway, I should probably update it now, I deleted Tirza and Rogon too quickly though to give any protips anymore.
Also, I dont think you should take this very seriously as the monks were still new and me with my combined of 50 hours rnk playtime am not as experienced as many other recent monks are, e.g. Waschen/Kehriyl |

I've got some questions about monks if this is the place to get them answered. Otherwise I'll ask in Newbie Q&A.
Fists of fury. What's the deal with this skill? Is it worth it? It seems to consume absurd amounts of yang chii, but I don't see much happening in return, just that occasionally one of my attacks will "hit with fury", though it doesn't seem to do much if any more damage.
Also I still have questions about monk tattoos. I know intermediate gives a special skill, and grandmaster gives a bonus to a basic skill, and they all give stat bonus when the tattoo is used as an armor slot. Does each level also increase how well you use the style? For example will master level panther style do the panther riposte more often than intermediate? Will intermediate do them more often then no tattoo at all?
And regarding the grandmaster basic skill bonus. Do you have to be in the respective style to get that bonus? I.e. do I have to actually be in monkey style to get the dirt kick bonus? |

Its leopard not panther, and fist of fury makes your attacks (when its fully mastered every hit will strike with it I believe) do magical chii based damage as opposed to physical damage. Its their 'counter' to the invoker barrier.
While I'm unsure on if the tattoo does benefit the styles of each one, I can tell you that it does go up in the stats it gives, for example a 'Master level' Leopard gives you... 2 hitroll and 1 damage if on arms. Also the body placement does change what it does (supposedly) Grandmaster drunk gives you like 100 or so AC if on chest. From what most people say, it is hardest to find a good arm slot, so that's the best one to go for on grandmaster or so they say.
And lastly no, you do not have to be in the style. Because back when it was done, crane boosted air thrash, which was normally used while offensive empowered before Dav removed that(thank the blood god himself). So, you do not need to be in monkey to get the boosted dirt kick from monkey style. |

Fists of fury doesn't do much right now (it doesn't add a magical attack. It did once upon a time, though). What it's supposed to do is give more punches at the expense of some parries, but it hardly even does that. I haven't noticed an intermediate leopard's riposting, but a grandmaster does do them quite often. They're for hits and scratches, but they're there. And you got to use your yin chii sparingly; that doesn't like to build in battle like yang chii can. |

Yin chio builds by disarming. And by using kick, which when you double kick, it has a chance for giving two nodes worth of chii |

Yin and Yang chii should both be building in combat by normal hits. Also with my warlord I don't recall fists of fury adding magical damage, it was the styles active component that did special magical damage attacks such as tiger style's tiger claw doing fire damage. Currently Fists of Fury has a chance to consume offensive chii to perform an additional martial arts a/b attack. It is possible that I just never noticed the magical damage component of fists of fury in the past, but the magical damage component of active styles still exists. |

From what Dav said he wanted it to be, it was for it to do magical damage so it could hit through barrier, don't know if that changed or not... |

Yin is supposed to charge during battle with regular hits, but it still really doesn't. |

The very first version of Fists of Fury added the magic damage. Then it changed to adding more damage I believe, since he felt it wasn't being used how he wanted it to be, if I recall. But it still doesn't seem like much from what I can notice. Also Meriando is right, if you need the magical damage, different styles will add it. So if it's a mage you're fighting you can get through the barrier/add more damage against ice/fire shields with the right styles. I know, everyone just loves leopard, but most of the styles have nice things I don't think people realize.
If you need to build any chii, trying using kick. Almost every style adds something to that as well. Snake-slow, drunken-a stun(I believe), crane-barrage, etc... |

Mantis kick is best kick. A lot of people don't use mantis but I think it's pretty good. If you have maxed anatomy of whatever you're fighting it will do tons of damage. |

Mantis pressure points are great, but you never know when they will land. I would have to take into account what class type I am fighting before going into snake or mantis for the two handed style. Whether I feel the slow from snake would be better than a chance at a pressure point. |
