I either don't care or want the imms to decide on a case-by-case basis. |

|

I'm curious if the current playerbase has any strong feelings about how we handle our area updates. Every situation is different, but there's two main ways these are handled. Past areas overhauls with Method 1 include Tyr Unguld, Solace, and Shire/Mudfall. Past area upgrades with Method 2 include Moria/Tenebria, Battlezone, and Dragon Tower.
Method 1: Plausible Events
Pros: The reasons for area changes fit in-game lore and make sense in-game. This is often accompanied by immortal run in-game build-up.(i.e. Tyr Unguld on lockdown to develop new security protocols, Solace needing rebuilt after the town burned, etc.)
Cons: The area often needs to be temporarily closed while the upgrades occur, but we can limit the impact on eq meta with things like a black tear guard posted outside the closed gate of Tyr Unguld.
Method 2: The Retcon
Pros: Minimal disruption to the current area
Cons: Can be jarring to in-game lore/immersion as routes or areas suddenly change. |

I feel like these pro's / con's could be filled out a little more. Like retcon is useful for helping shit make sense that didnt make sense previously and its safer to just throw in the towel. The minotaur race helpfile is complete and total retcon of the race being dumped on us at second age and so long ago that almost nobody cares for the "nostalgia" of the sudden influx of trash pk'ing level 15 berserkers dual wielding axes. (Although that was hilarious since we were actually complaining about pk'ing level 15 fire giant berserkers and demanding it gets changed - it was) |

personally i find it really annoying when im running to mahn-tor and without warning all of a sudden there is a up/down part where there wasnt before and it really left a bad taste in my mouth. the common felt the same way all of a sudden it was different.
If you wanted my real opinion on the matter... leave all the current areas alone. stop remoddeling old areas. if you want to be creative than make a new area completely. there is plenty of dead end areas that have room for more crap. Sometimes it feels like you guys change things just for the sake of change... But i come here because this is the same game I played 20 years ago. I come for the nostalgia. I would be fine without any new content at all. |

Plausible Events for sure. Make a whole story of it and build it up. The excitement and curiosity is half of the fun. |

I hate changes to existing areas and replacing of old areas. Absolutely hate them. Every once in awhile I freak out and see an old area that has been reworked and it makes me so angry I lash out at the other immortals. I try my best to act positive and supportive of the imms working on area updates because I want them to feel helpful and I don't want to shit on their hard work but you have no idea how hard it is. I don't want to mention any specific areas but I absolute hate every area update that has happened with a vehemency that's extremely difficult to put into words. I don't mean things like equipment stat or weight changes or adding of new content like Solace or quests but rather the replacement of old areas with newly developed ones. Each of these updates has hurt the game in my opinion. I have the sneaky suspicion that nobody likes it and they just pretend to because they think everyone else wants that new content. Like if I log in and see the fields in the Ford are changed I'm probably going to lose my shit big time |

Jesus Nyct haha.
I don't mind either way, my preference is as others have stated to have new areas added, not replacing old ones, so that the map itself becomes bigger and more interesting without taking away what is already there.
As far as how it is implemented, I don't care, whatever makes it easier for the imms- whatever gets more areas in the game imo. If it's a smaller burden to just build the areas and not worry about the events, then please, build the areas. You all work hard enough that whatever you enjoy doing, you should be able to focus on that part. |

I agree that major area changes are off-putting, and are even more off-putting when they're done in a deus ex machina fashion. If there are going to be updates to areas, I think there definitely has to be a lead-up to it that makes sense within game lore.
Like Solace burning down and being rebuilt. Or the Tyr Unguld security upgrade.
The changes that happen out of the blue are tough. Like when the hobgoblins moved that really fucked with me. I had not played in a bit, rolled a warrior and went to find a purple. I only rolled classes that could cast sanctuary for like 6 months after that because of the area update. (I know, I could have explored and found where they moved too but the move just felt bleh).
New areas I don't think need as much of an rp connection but I think if there are new areas implemented, they should be towards expanding the world with an eye towards a more connected map rather than just adding off-shoot challenge areas. |
