They get control of your web cam and can see everything that you do. Thats how they know if you are scripting afk and stuff.

well ibendtime, what imms personally know about you and other players through the game intself is limited to the immortal's level which denotes the security level they are individually granted. higher level imms get to know more about you, because they actually need this information to carry out their higher job functions.

Immortals as a group however, know pretty much everything about every character and a great deal about the players who log on to those characters too. a vast array of specialized tools exist to help imms catch cheaters and bug abusers, and even low level imms without any high security clearances can still assist the staff by working with whatever is at their disposal. no system is fail-safe, but rest assured the imm staff works hard to protect you and the everyday player so that everyone has a chance to play in a fair environment.

IP address, mainly.

Some MUDs require users to have a valid email address.

Speaking from a purely technical point of view, when you are on the 'net, the only information that can be received about you (without, of course, the aid of various and sundry sniffers and virii) is the following:

IP - (Though that can be spoofed with the help of proxies)
DNS - Sometimes, if it resolves.
Operating System - Which can also be spoofed, which I would do if I ever had to surf the net on a Macintosh
Browser Version (if going through HTTP) - Which can be spoofed, especially if you make your own browser.

Often times your IP can be used to trace personal information about you. Which is why I usually spoof mine.

Of course, I'm a paranoid bastard, too.

So, that's about the long and skinny of it.
