The wasteland is motivated by this essay:

In it, the grandfather of muds lists out four types of MUD players : achiever, explorer, socializer, killer. I encourage you to read the whole essay carefully. Of important note is that killers get off perversely on not being likeable, and although achievers will absolutely swear on the bible that all killers suck and why havent we banned these trashy guys and got rid of the wasteland already, it is also 100% true that achievers need those sharks around to add value to their rare equipment, and therefore make their achievements feel much more thrilling and give the game a feel of more intensity. Some points. Having the wasteland puts the "pure killers" in their own forum section, rather than just posting shit everywhere. We also have roleplaying section. Unsurprisingly, they don't seem to attract as much trouble. In fact people rarely post anything in that roleplaying section at all. But a place for self-destructive people to get together and do self-destructive things ? People rush at that like its black friday at best buy. We all love our drama dont we.

Our problem is this. driving off killers completely (which is actually a fuck-ton easier than you might think - just IGNORE their posts and they shrink) literally leads to a loss of interest by the achievers in achieving, and that can kill the MUD as well.. via boredom. So there's a balancing act between making the killers feel disliked - which they really do crave - but NOT also totally unwanted and unwelcome. Driving them all off would definitely do more harm than good to the mud.

Anyway so just read the essay first please. Remember you are equally important too. You're just as important as everybody else here. We've just got to make sure we get the equilbrium right to generate as much fun for everyone who plays as we can. That can definitely be a game of ping-pong. I think at this point in history, more so than any other, there is no word in the english language (especially right now) that does more nuclear harm than the n-bomb, so killers are currently holding a rather OP tool. This needs to be nerfed somehow. If you guys have any input onto how you think you can do this better than we are doing, I am all ears. Believe me I am. Because it is a very hard problem. And I know the younger people playing AR on the front lines are going to understand it much better than I currently do in my fucking old age. I personally cannot make sense of it why things happening like yosemite sam doesnt have guns anymore. It is 2020 and Elmer Fudd is not allowed to hunt bugs bunny
